I am running OS X 10.8.5 and Crossover 13.1 (13.1.0.27669).
I started off by following the instructions in this thread but I experienced several issues (as well as the graphics issue mentioned above).
I was given the option to create a new file:
- With options for no password, password, or sign in with Windows Live ID. Whichever option I chose, I was forced to sign in with Windows Live ID. Even this failed, even though I could log in via Internet Explorer.
- I also got an error to say that the filename contained invalid characters or the disk is read only or full. Although I'm guessing this is due to the default location for the data file being on the Mac's main file system so it might be a permissions issue.
However, I managed to get around these issues by executing the following steps:
- Installed Sunset on a Windows VM, created a new Money file and switched off any settings that were concerned with connecting to online services. I then copied this file to my Mac.
- Disabled my Mac's virus scanner.
- Disabled Crossover's virus scanner as described here.
- Installed Internet Explorer 8 into a new XP Bottle from here. I disabled any options to update and did not click 'Restart' when prompted. When the installer finished, I rebooted the bottle and then started IE8 to complete its setup.
- I copied the Money data file I created earlier onto the Bottle's Desktop directory (the internal one, not my Mac's desktop).
- I installed Money into the same bottle. On starting Money, the desktop file was automatically selected and it started up absolutely perfectly and was fully functional. In the top right hand corner was a spinning wheel and it seemed to be trying to update something. I noticed that if I clicked exit from within the app, it would hang but if I exited via my Mac's menus then it was okay.
- However, as stated above, the next time I open it, the graphics are not working properly but it does seem to be functional.
- A diff of the Bottle before starting Money for the first time compared with the Bottle after the first run suggests that it is changes in the system.reg, user.reg and userdef.reg files that might be at fault. I haven't had a chance to investigate further.
Does anyone know if it is possible to disable networking for a bottle? I'm wondering if the failed update on first run is corrupting the bottle.
As an aside, Money 2000 seems to be working perfectly.
If I get a chance to dig down deeper into the diffs I will report back.

[Update: After evaluating the alternatives, I discovered a way to automatically download the transactions and price quotes and feed them to Money after Microsoft pulls the plug. Back in June 2009, Microsoft announced they would stop selling their personal finance software Microsoft Money. I have been a Microsoft Money user since it was Money ’98. With Microsoft’s throwing in the towel, my current version will work as-is until September 2010. After that, two download features will stop working:
Mint is a free online budget planner from Intuit, the makers of TurboTax and Quickbooks. Click on “View wrapper in Finder” and it will take you to where the Microsoft Money wrapper is installed which is in the Wineskin folder in Applications. Quit the Wineskin Winery App. Then double click on the Microsoft Money Wineskin icon that was created and the Microsoft Money Wineskin installer will launch. Click on Install Software. Dec 02, 2012 I have been using Microsoft Money Plus Sunset for many years, and never a problem, I updated to Windows 10 and now when I open money, I put in my password and the program opens then I immediately get a window that says 'Microsoft Money has stopped working, A problem caused the program to stop working correctly, Windows will now close the program, please help.
- download transactions from my banks, credit cards, and brokerage accounts from inside the money program, without having to go to the web site of each bank, credit card company, and brokerage firm
- download the current prices for my investments
Although I can still enter transactions or update prices manually, the download features sure make it much more convenient.
I don’t quite understand why the download service has to be disabled when they stop developing new versions of Microsoft Money. Can’t they offer the download service at $15 a year? I would pay it just to avoid the hassle of switching. Oh well, it is what it is and I’m looking for a replacement of Microsoft Money before that expiration date comes.
There are are number of free web sites that aggregate your transactions online. Mint.com is a popular choice. But I’m old school. I prefer to keep those data on my own computer. I’m limiting my search to desktop applications.
Before I begin my quest, I wrote down exactly what I use Microsoft Money for. Ideally I’d like to maintain all these functionalities. I use them as my evaluation criteria for the replacement candidates.
- Categorize transactions in bank and credit card accounts, including splitting one transaction into several categories
- Download transactions for bank, credit card, and brokerage accounts
- Reconcile account balances against bank and credit card statements
- Maintain a budget and report income and expenses against the budget
- Track loan payments and allocate between principal and interest automatically
- Track investment values, purchases, sales, dividends, interest, and capital gains and losses
- Update price quotes automatically for investments
- Report investment portfolio returns over any period
- Report net worth over time
Ideally I also would like to import as much as possible from my existing Microsoft Money file into the replacement application.
My replacement candidates are: Quicken, GnuCash, and Moneydance. I will review them one by one in the next few posts.
